READING VERSION NUMBERS ON CARLTON PROGRAMS
Authors all have their own method of creating new version numbers for their
programs. The following is MY method, which I find to be helpful in allowing
SYSOPs to know whether or not it is NECESSARY to upgrade to the latest version.
ex: DOORTRAK V3.1a
Each place in the Version Number is actually a decription of the version.
The "3" indicates that there have been three major versions to the program;
this usually indicates new features have been added or there has been a
structure change. Upgrading to new Major Updates is recommended.
The "1" means that during version three, there has been one improvement on
currently available features. It could have been a re-written routine to
perform better, or a feature has new options, etc. Upgrading may increase
performance, but is not necessary to get the same results.
The "a" stands for bug fixes, or changes that do not effect the way the door
runs. An "a" is used as a place-holder if there have been no bugs found in
that version. With each fix, this is incremented one letter.
